ENSO Explains the Link Between Indian Ocean Dipole and Meridional Ocean Heat Transport

چکیده
Indian Ocean meridional heat transport (MHTIO) drives climate and ecosystem impacts, through changes to ocean temperature. Improved understanding of natural variability in tropical subtropical MHTIO is needed contextualize observations future projections. Previous studies suggest that El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Dipole (IOD) can drive MHTIO. However, it unclear whether internally generated IOD MHTIO, or if the apparent relationship between arises because both are modulated by ENSO. Here, we use a model experiment which dynamically removes ENSO determine role forced on We find not linked anomalies Nevertheless, internal atmospheric significant variability. There little evidence for decadal multidecadal suggesting this may be region where an anthropogenic trend rises above level sooner.

Revisiting ENSO/Indian Ocean Dipole phase relationships
Here we show that the characteristics of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), such as its power spectrum and phase relationship with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), can be succinctly explained by ENSO combination mode (C-mode) wind and heat flux forcing together with a seasonal modulation of the air/sea coupled Indian Ocean (IO) Bjerknes feedback. This model explains the observed high-freque...
متن کاملInteraction Between the Indian Ocean Dipole and ENSO Associated with Ocean Subsurface Variability
The Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) is an intrinsic coupled mode of variability in the tropical Indian Ocean. It has broad impacts on regional climate. An IOD index is defined as the difference between sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies averaged over the western Indian Ocean (WIO, 50°–70°E, 10°S– 10°N) and eastern Indian Ocean (EIO, 90°– 110°E, 10°S–Eq.). An important issue in the studies of IOD...
متن کاملA Look at the Relationship between the ENSO and the Indian Ocean Dipole
Using observed sea surface temperature data from 1871-1998, and observed wind data from 1958-1998, we have confirmed that the recently discovered Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is a physical entity. Many IOD events are shown to occur independently of the El Niño. By estimating the contribution from an appropriate El Niño index based on sea surface temperature anomaly in the eastern Pacific, we have ...

متن کاملRelationship Among Sea Surface Temperature, ENSO and Indian Ocean Dipole in the Indian Ocean: A Clue to Recognizing Convective Systems
The Northern Indian Ocean is unique in the global ocean because of seasonal reversal of winds as well as surface ocean currents. In the southern part of the Indian Ocean, a significant ocean-atmospheric phenomenon developed just like an El Nino phenomenon noticed in the Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon is known as the Indian Ocean Dipole. In this study we investigate the relationship between IOD ...
